What's the Story?
TIGER & BUNNY is an anime series featuring heroes who fight crime while negotiating the constraints of corporate demands. It's 1978, and in Stern Bild City, superheroes known as "Noted Entities with Extraordinary Talents," or NEXT, are publicly fighting crimes while giving their corporate sponsors much-desired publicity, thanks to the help of Hero TV, which broadcasts their activities live and awards them points toward becoming the season's King of Heroes. Among the group is NEXT veteran Kotetsu T. Kaburagi, aka Wild Tiger, who is less interested in becoming the King of Heroes and more concerned with keeping the peace, even if it means destroying public property and costing his sponsors money. But when his waning powers, and pressures from sponsors, force Tiger to partner with arrogant newbie Barnaby Brooks Jr., aka Bunny, things start getting a lot more complicated.
Is It Any Good?
This entertaining anime series situates superheroes in a place where they have to negotiate their desire to serve the public with the financial pressures associated with making a living as crimefighters. Despite the strong commentary on media exploitation and the ethics associated with doing good works for money and celebrity status, it still manages to weave in some dramatic plot lines and intense villainy -- and, of course, some comedic tension between the two main characters. The second season of the show takes this further, as the unlikely duo is called upon to set a good example for the new, younger heroes entering the fray. Overall, Tiger & Bunny is a fun, creative, and smart series that tells a good story.
