What's the Story?

TO BE HERO X follows Ling Ling (voiced by Mauricio Ortiz-Segura), a young advertiser who writes commercials for a marketing company. He has a contract with two well-known superheroes: Nice (voiced by Branden Loera, and then Mauricio Ortiz-Segura) and Moon (voiced by Bryn Apprill). When the original Nice walks himself off a building, Ling Ling is forced to become the new Nice, forgetting his previous identity in the process.

This anime is visually stunning and entertaining. To Be Hero X is fast-paced and exciting, introducing a cool concept that makes sense without a ton of exposition. It also takes creative chances: The switch between a modern animation style and retro comic-style drawings is a really interesting choice—it pays off.

Talk to Your Kids About ...

  • Families can talk about how Ling Ling forms a parasocial relationship with Moon and comes to emotionally depend on her despite never meeting her. Is this a healthy way to form a relationship? Why, or why not?

  • Families can talk about suicide. Do you think shows and media have a responsibility when portraying events like Nice's death? What do you think that responsibility is?
