What's the Story?

TO COOK A BEAR opens in the small Swedish town of Kengis, with a new pastor (Gustaf Skarsgård) coming to town with his family. Murders and sexual assaults of the local young women are initially blamed on a bear attack, but as the pastor begins looking into the clues, he discovers a much more dangerous predator.

The story in this series is engaging, and while the violence and suspense can leave you a bit breathless from time to time, it's not an easy-to-solve mystery. To Cook a Bear is a very binge-able and heavy murder mystery. Gustaf Skarsgård's wig and the fake bear are the weakest actors in the bunch—everyone else is believable and thoroughly unlikable.

Talk to Your Kids About ...

  • Families can talk about the hard living in a farming village in Sweden in the 1850s. Would you and your family thrive in an environment where all of your food is grown or hunted, there is only one store for things like rope and shoe grease, and no running water for washing up? What do you think the pros and cons of that type of life were?

  • The role of women in the town of Kengis was to provide labor and care for children. Yet, the most powerful person in the town is a rich widow. Do you see any similarities with class/economy and social standing where you live today?
