What's the Story?
TRESE, set in Manila, Philippines, follows Alexandra Trese (voiced by Shay Mitchell), a young but strong female detective who solves murders, specifically relating to a place called "The Underground." The Underground is filled with creatures including ghouls, vampires, monsters, zombies, and more that are part of Filipino folklore. When her father passes away, Alexandra takes on a leader role and becomes "protector of both worlds." The pressure of her title and responsibility weigh on her, but that doesn't stop her from doing the best she can. Alexandra fights to keep the peace between the people of Manila and The Underground while maintaining justice and making her family proud.
Is It Any Good?
Despite the excessive violence, which feels a bit unnecessary to the plot, this anime is refreshing and an interesting watch. When watching Trese, the viewer expects to see the typical zombie storylines, but this is not the case. The focus on Filipino folklore is unusual in the anime genre; it's nice to see the Filipino culture and language represented, especially with a strong female lead.
