What Parents Need to Know
Parents need to know that Vic the Viking is a French animated series about a 10-year-old Viking boy and heir to the chiefdom of his father's village. Friendship and family relationships feature prominently in the stories, as does Vic's knack for solving problems with creativity and cleverness rather than with violence. Some antagonistic characters come across as greedy, vindictive, and mean, but they're usually the losers when they match wits with Vic and his parents. Violence is minimal, though there are visible weapons like swords and maces, and there's some name-calling like "numbskull" and "fool."

What's the Story?
As the son of Viking chief Halvar and his wife, Ylva, young VIC THE VIKING finds himself at the heart of all kinds of adventures in and around his home village of Flake. There's the fun he has alongside his father's crew sailing the open sea, and the unpredictable happenings inside the village when outsiders come to visit. And then there are the skirmishes that erupt when Halvar's sworn enemy, Sven, comes around to stir up trouble with his hapless crew all in the name of promoting the true Viking way over Halvar's gentler style of plunder.
Is It Any Good?
Young Vic paints a friendly picture of a Viking town existence, and he's an appealing ambassador for the life of a chief in the making. Though the conflicts that arise around him usually don't involve him directly at first, he's never one to use his size and youth as an excuse to avoid what he can instead jump in and solve. Vic proves his worth time and again with clever ideas that win over his critics and upend the plans of those who mean him and his community harm.
Vic the Viking rounds the rough edges of traditional Viking lore with silliness, friendship, and a pleasant family structure in Vic's home. This last point is worth emphasizing since male characters tend to outnumber female ones in the stories (not many female plunderers here), but that doesn't mean that the girls blend into the background. In the case of Vic's mother especially, she makes her presence known and takes no guff from the menfolk, whether friend or foe, but she's also kind and nurturing to the men in her life.

Families can talk about how Vic fits in with the Viking culture in Vic the Viking. Are his values the same as the adult Vikings'? How does his style of solving problems differ from the traditional Viking way? Is it more or less effective than the other?
Kids: How do outside circumstances influence your confidence? Does the idea of facing off with adults like Vic does inspire you?
Are there good role models in this story? If so, who and for what reason? Do you think Vic's mom is representative of women of the time? If not, what is the purpose of her nontraditional personality?
