What's the Story?

WELCOME TO THE FAMILY (aka Bienvenidos a la familia) is a Mexican comedy series about an extended family desperately trying to get their hands on an inheritance. When single mom Cristina Lezama (Marimar Vega) pays off the mortgage to the apartment where she and her children, Jorge (Ricardo Selmen), Toto (Santiago Colores), and Jana (Alondra Garcia) live, it's a day for a celebration. But the joy is short-lived when local gangster Alfonso Aldama (Gerardo Taracena) shows up with his henchmen to claim it, thanks to a family member's debt that was never repaid. She, along with her ex-brother-in-law Moi (Martin Altomaro) and the kids go to Cristina's estranged father, Raúl Ruiz (Arturo Beristain), for help. After a heated exchange, during which time he refuses to help, Ruiz suddenly has a heart attack and dies. At first she sees it as an opportunity, but it turns out that neither Cristina nor her children, nor his widow Luciana (Erika Buenfil), nor his stepdaughter Ines (Carla Adell) are named in his will. Now the entire family has to make people believe that he's still alive while they figure out how to get the inheritance that they believe they're entitled to.

The dark Mexican TV comedy series employs lots of physical comedy and quick banter to provide viewers with some fast-paced fun throughout each 30-minute episode. The Welcome to the Family premise is humorous, and many of the scenarios are often silly and improbable. It also offers some likable characters, even if they'll stop at nothing to save the house they all believe is theirs. There are some serious themes, but little to be taken too seriously, which is exactly the point of watching the show. If you're looking for a lighthearted viewing experience that will make you chuckle, Welcome to the Family may fit the bill.

Talk to Your Kids About ...

  • Families can talk about comedy. Different cultures often find different things funny, so how is it possible for comedy TV shows produced in one country to be successful in another?

  • In Welcome to the Family, are we supposed to like Cristina, Luciana, and the rest of the people trying to get Raúl Ruiz's money, even if what they're doing is underhanded or illegal?
