What's the Story?

Set during Holy Week in a small Spanish town, WHEN NO ONE SEES US follows two investigators—Spanish Civil Guard sergeant Lucía Gutiérrez (Maribel Verdu) and U.S. military investigator Magaly Castillo (Mariela Garriga)—as their separate cases become dangerously intertwined. Lucía is looking into a bizarre ritualistic suicide, while Magaly arrives at a nearby military base searching for a missing cybersecurity expert. As they dig deeper, they uncover a complex web of corruption, religious mysteries, and a new drug, all while facing powerful forces determined to keep the truth buried.

This noirish thriller sets up a mystery reminiscent of the gritty True Detective series. The When No One Sees Us opening sequences create strong shock values and hint at deeper religious themes. But the show never fully capitalizes on its offbeat undertones. Instead, it leans heavily on genre tropes—interrogations, interviews, and bureaucratic hurdles—without offering much originality.

The depiction of life on a U.S. Army base in Spain adds some texture, but the investigative scenes often feel procedural rather than gripping. A courtroom subplot also lacks the intensity needed to stand out. The technical aspects are solid but unremarkable, with nothing visually or stylistically distinctive. While the show has some female gaze and flirts with compelling ideas, it turns out to be a half-baked detective drama that fails to leave a strong impression.
