Parents' Guide to Yizo Yizo

Parents need to know that Yizo Yizo is a gritty high school drama that takes place in a South African township. Between abusive and corrupt heads-of-staff, rampant student violence, gang activity, drug use and sexual abuse, the students struggle daily to get their education and stay safe. Violence is perpetrated by both staff and students. The school's principal beats a student with a stick over a new haircut and beats another student so badly she is hospitalized. A student gang leader sells drugs openly and is often high or drunk at school; they also flush a student's head into a soiled toilet as a form of punishment. An abusive principal is replaced by another who has impregnated a student. A handful of students refuse to accept the oppressive and threatening conditions and form a club to work together trying to make school conditions better in whatever small ways they can.
