Engagement, Approach, Support

Engagement

With so many entertaining and interactive elements, kids are bound to find something engaging. However, the layout is a bit busy and ads are a big distraction.

Learning Approach

There are lots of games and opportunities for drill practice, and many have solid potential for reinforcing learning. However, kids don't take much of an active role in shaping their experiences or learning from their mistakes.

Support

A wealth of content ensures there is something for everyone. Many games have instructional videos, but once in the game, there's little help. Tracking progress through the site is limited to certificates for completing each game.

Kids can learn a wide range of topics in math, language arts, history, geography, and science on this educational gaming site geared to elementary school students. Many of the games and lessons are sorted by age level and let kids adjust difficulty based on factors like time and number of variables. Teachers can also customize games to use in the classroom. Though many games include instructional videos, the games tend to be very simple and they lack fancy features, including in-game help. Overall, MrNussbaum.com is a nice collection of interactive activities that, with good guidance, can be a fun way to reinforce a wide variety of topics.

What's it about?

Greg Nussbaum is a fourth grade teacher in Virginia who began a small classroom site to assist his own students. The site has grown to a formidable online educational presence and is visited more than 5 million times per month. Full of custom interactive games and activities, MRNUSSBAUM was developed based on the idea that crucial concepts, themes, ideas, and fact sets taught in the classroom can be enhanced over the Internet through interactivity. It's widely used by K-8 teachers in computer labs and classrooms and provides a safe clearinghouse for elementary-level educational games.

QUALITY

Although MrNussbaum's games aren't chock full of high-end graphics or complex interactions, they are smartly crafted, engaging tools that kids can access at home for fun or practice. With dozens of games in many subjects and a variety of interesting applications (such as Draggable Math) and activities, there’s something to supplement whatever students are studying.

Families can talk about...

  • Families can talk about how to find reliable information on the Internet. What are some safe places to browse? How can you tell which sites you can trust?

  • Why is it important to find age-appropriate information through a trusted site rather than through a wider Google search? What are the benefits of going to a single site like Mr. Nussbaum's that offer options and learning opportunities?

  • How does time spent on interactive learning games help supplement and reinforce traditional schoolwork? How does it make learning more interesting? Are there ways that media and time spent on computers can help your progress in school? Hinder it?
