What’s It About?
SCIFIWIRE.COM, a spinoff from the SciFi Channel Web site, delivers daily updates and the latest news on science fiction and fantasy movies, TV shows, books, comics, games, and many other types of media. Though it calls itself a news site, it's organized like a blog, and combines straight news, gossip, opinion pieces, interviews, interactive features and other fun tidbits for fans. Though the content is aimed at serious fans, with plenty of interesting trivia about popular franchises, much of the content skews to older fans and teens, with details about behind-the-scenes events and discussions about business details that may not appeal to younger kids. Most of the articles have great images, and some have video clips as well.
Is It Any Good?
SciFiWire.com will likely be immensely popular with die-hard fans of sci-fi and fantasy. It provides a fine balance between substance, with up-to-the-minute reports about favorite shows, and fluff, such as lists of great trailers for bad films or the most awesome werewolf special effects. The features are delivered in bite-sized nuggets, so visitors can quickly catch up on the latest entertainment news, or stay and browse for a while. Even casual enthusiasts will find plenty of stories worth reading, since the site follows both obscure, esoteric shows ("The Prisoner") and big Hollywood blockbusters ("The Terminator").
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about the enduring popularity of science fiction. Few genres generate the intense devotion sci fi and fantasy does, yet the genres are sometimes mocked. Why do you think these stories have such a polarizing effect? Why do you think sci-fi and fantasy are so popular with some people, yet denigrated by others? Do you like sci-fi? Why or why not?
