A lot or a little?

The parents' guide to what's in this app.

Ease of Play

It's quite easy to tap the appropriate numbered space on a coloring page. Kids might need a little instruction on how to play the coloring games as intended.

Bonus illustration packs for purchase are visible on the home screen -- you won't realize you need to pay extra for them until you click to choose them. However, in the settings, you can toggle off the click-to-buy option on the bonus packs.

What parents need to know

Parents need to know that 123 Color HD Talking Coloring Book for iPad is not just a color-by-number app. While there are number/letter learning games that allows kids to "win" when they color all the spaces with the properly denoted hues, there's also a mode that allows for free color choices. This mode is unfortunately a little hard to find, as you have to enter "settings" and then disable "color suggestions." Coloring here is done with a tap; entire segments filling in automatically. This makes it an easier app for toddlers to use. Parents will be happy to know they can remove any unwanted songs from the app's playlist of nursery rhyme-type tunes.

Is it any good?

123 COLOR HD TALKING COLORING BOOK FOR iPAD is probably the best color-by-numbers app available. There are plenty of fun pictures to choose from, and toddlers can definitely practice their 123s and ABCs by filling in the hues on these pre-planned images. There's a map of the world image that can also help kids learn where the different continents are. And thankfully -- as kids will most certainly want a chance to re-color pics with their own choice of hues -- there's a free coloring mode as well. That free color mode offers suggestions in its default mode, so you'll probably want to disable those or kids will assume they're still supposed to use the denoted colors. As a click-and-fill coloring app, 123 Color is a simple and easy one for toddler to use and will also engage elementary-age kids too.
