Educational Value

Kids can learn and practice numerous skills with 3rd Grade Splash Math Game, ranging from addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division to measurement, probability, and geometry. Kids can start by completing worksheets, and then test their knowledge by taking quizzes. They earn points for correct answers, but feedback only prompts kids to try again when they get it wrong. It would be great if kids could see solutions or explanations as part of the feedback. Earning prizes to build the aquarium is fun, and the progress reports are impressive. Highly interactive worksheets covering a wide range of skills makes 3rd Grade Splash Math Game a great choice for math practice.

Ease of Play

Kids will find the app easy to use, and adults can access an information screen for more detailed explanations of the features.

Small pop-up ads for the developer's other apps appear regularly on the home screen. When users tap on the ads, they have to enter the digits that represent a word number; kids using this third-grade app will be able to do this with no problem, so it's not an effective parental control. This takes users to a list of apps that can be purchased in the App Store. A free version in the App Store has a limit of 20 questions per day.

What parents need to know

Parents need to know that 3rd Grade Splash Math Game is a cheerful, comprehensive tool that helps kids practice and strengthen a wide range of math skills. In the practice mode, kids complete worksheets that cover skills such as number sense, measurement, place value, fractions, and more. In the play mode, kids take quizzes to assess what they learned, earning points for correct answers. Kids also can earn prizes called "Super Splashies," which they can use to build their own aquariums and learn about sea creatures. Unfortunately, the prize activities are totally separate from the learning process, which can be distracting. Parents should keep in mind that, although they are quite small, pop-up ads for the developer's other apps regularly appear on the home screen and lead to links to the App Store.

What's it about?

3RD GRADE SPLASH MATH GAME is an interactive digital workbook with cheerful graphics and leveled learning. Kids can use the practice mode to complete worksheets and the play mode to test their knowledge. There is a built-in scratch pad kids can use if they need to write out calculations. Each mode includes three levels, and a level must be completed before the next one is unlocked. Kids also can use a customizable math-facts option to help improve fluency. Kids earn points for correct answers, and their scores are tracked. The prizes option takes kids to a screen where they can use their points to build an aquarium and play games. In the parents' section, worksheets, quizzes, and math facts can be customized to include a specific number of questions up to 100. Parents can tap to view a progress report and a history of gameplay.

Is it any good?

3rd Grade Splash Math Game encourages kids to have fun while doing math. The cheerful ocean theme and aquarium games are engaging, and kids will enjoy popping bubbles and dragging objects to complete the worksheets and quizzes. The depth of coverage, customizable features, and detailed progress reports are impressive. A minor drawback is that kids can't see why they got an answer wrong, so more constructive feedback would be quite useful. Other minor quibbles are a few instances wherein the correct answer is somewhat ambiguous, a few spellings aren't standard American English, and the reward system is separate from the learning process. Still, if you're looking for a fun way for kids to practice third grade math skills, this app delivers.
