A lot or a little?

The parents' guide to what's in this app.

Educational Value

Kids can learn and practice fifth-grade math skills that are tightly aligned with Common Core math standards. The questions within each topic increase in difficulty as kids make progress. Worksheets are scored, and, once kids earn enough points, they get "UFO" rewards. Kids can use these to unlock arcade-style games. Unfortunately, the rewards are separate from the exercises, which can lure kids away from learning. The feedback for incorrect answers is excellent because it includes explanations to help kids learn from their mistakes. 5th Grade Math: Splash Math Common Core Worksheets is a great way to reinforce skills and motivate kids to practice and become fluent in math.

Ease of Play

Information is well organized, so kids will find it easy to navigate through the worksheets and choose the skills they want to practice.

Small pop-up ads for the developer's other apps appear regularly on the home screen. When users tap on the ads, they have to enter the digits that represent a word number; kids using this fifth-grade app will be able to do this with no problem, so it's not an effective parental control. This takes users to a list of apps that can be purchased in the App Store. A free version of the app has a limit of 20 questions per day.

What's it about?

5TH GRADE MATH: SPLASH MATH COMMON CORE WORKSHEETS is a comprehensive math tool filled with grade-appropriate interactive worksheets. Kids can earn points for answering questions, and the points build up to "UFO" rewards, which kids can use to unlock games. The worksheets have a built-in scratch pad for writing out calculations, and feedback for incorrect answers is nicely detailed with mathematical explanations. The parents' section is great for viewing progress reports, looking up a history of gameplay, and assigning homework.

Is it any good?

5th Grade Math: Splash Math Common Core Worksheets is filled with worksheets that cover the essential math topics for fifth grade. Earning points and rewards to unlock games is motivating, and the brightly designed worksheets are engaging. Practicing skills repeatedly can be a bit redundant, but this is a necessary part of becoming fluent in math. The biggest drawback is that the reward system is completely separate from the learning process, and this can make it difficult to keep kids involved in the math exercises.
