A lot or a little?
The parents' guide to what's in this app.
What parents need to know
What's it about?
There are 18 different games, or skill sets, for kids to practice in ANIMAL MATH GAMES FOR KIDS. Skills are aligned with Common Core State Standards for kindergarten math. Kids choose a skill set, such as Counting to 10 or Addition to 5, and answer a set of problems by tapping on the correct answer. An animal travels along a path, completing one step of the path for each correct answer. If kids get an answer wrong, they can keep trying, but there's no feedback or explanation. Sounds, applause, and bursts of stars encourage kids as they play. Kids can't create individual profiles, so their progress is not saved or tracked in any way.
Is it any good?
The beautiful graphics are engaging, and the games cover a variety of skills, but the lack of learning support and the inability to track progress limits this app to a quick practice or review tool. Young kids will likely enjoy the colorful themes and the animal characters, which may motivate them to practice their math skills. It could be helpful to have simple, visual explanations for the problems that kids get wrong. The ability to create individual profiles with progress tracking would help parents see how kids are doing. So, while there's some solid, skill-building practice here, look to other apps for a deeper learning experience.
Talk to your kids about ...
Families can talk about using Animal Math Games for Kids as a fun way to practice important skills. Come up with a goal for using it at regular intervals, and create your own method for tracking progress.
Discuss how the skills that kids practice are used in everyday situations. For example, ask kids to come up with scenarios in which they would need to count to 10 or add to 5.
