A lot or a little?

The parents' guide to what's in this app.

Ease of Play

The game requires a lot of advance thinking and resource management to succeed. Players will die a lot -- even on the easy settings.

The game is set in a warzone and you oversee armored mobile troops who are relentlessly fired upon my alien machines -- and often explode. There is, however, no blood.

Occasional use of "damn" and "hell."

The app encourages you to "gift" a copy to friends.

What parents need to know

Parents need to know that Anomaly Warzone Earth HD is a twist on the familiar tower defense style game, where you take on the role of the troops wandering through the kill zone. You wind through a maze-like series of streets, fighting against alien towers that do their best to destroy you. This means non-stop violence, but it's never gory. While you don't hear screams of pain, the troops do put out distress calls for you to repair their mobile units before they explode. Users can share high scores via the Game Center social network as well as the Crystal network, but participation is optional.

Is it any good?

Tower defense games are quite common in the app store, but this reversal of the game model in Anomaly Warzone Earth HD, which puts you in the role of the troops walking into the kill zone, is a wonderfully creative and entertaining twist. The game has tons of variety in troops you can deploy (as well as upgrades you can choose) and giving you plenty of options as you choose your route. The production values are high and there's even a story that doesn't feel tacked on. It's an incredibly sleek, fluid game that might appear simple at first glance, but gets deeper and deeper the more you play it. And it's an absolute must for strategy fans. It was also the winner of the Apple Design Award.
