Clever grocery puzzles offer a fun, Tetris-like challenge.

What parents need to know

Educational value

Kids can learn a little about weight, force, and gravity as well as improve their strategy and problem-solving skills by completing the many challenging puzzles in Bag It!. Kids experiment with the weight of different grocery items and the effects of gravitational force in order to complete the levels and earn achievements. Bag It! engages kids in problem-solving as they apply physics concepts to the not-so-simple task of bagging groceries.

Ease of play

The first level of each game or puzzle provides text instructions and a few guiding pictures; however, goals and achievements are all in text, so reading is required. Gameplay starts off easy and builds slowly, giving players time to learn the ropes. To unlock the games, players have to earn a certain number of stars or medals. It's possible to unlock subsequent games without fully completing all the levels in the one before it, which is nice for players who get stumped by the tricky upper levels.

Violence & scariness

The groceries in Bag It! are characters who can be crushed when players put heavier items on top them. They shake and look scared when threatened, and some of them make a hurt sound and appear bruised when crushed. Two games reward players for destroying groceries by encouraging them to drop watermelons in a kind of destructive frenzy.

Sexy stuff

Sunshine, the orange juice, and Spilt, the milk, are sweethearts; players can earn the “Sweethearts” and “Double Date” bonuses by bagging them together. Kids will earn the “Nice Melons” bonus for placing two watermelons next to each other.

Consumerism

When players tap on a locked level or game, a pop-up gives them the option to unlock it with an in-app purchase. Also, there are in-app purchases for additional coins in the Multiplayer mode, which range from $.99 to $24.99. Players can unlock the levels and games by earning stars and medals through gameplay, but impatient kids might be tempted by the easy shortcut. Additionally, there is a small button on the title screen that links to more information about the developer. From there, kids can click to visit the developer’s website, Facebook page, and Twitter page.

Parents Need to Know

Parents need to know that Bag It! is a family-friendly puzzle game that turns bagging groceries into a Tetris-like challenge. In-app purchases aren't required for full gameplay, but could tempt kids who want to quickly unlock the more challenging levels or amass more game currency. Grocery items become cartoon characters in this game, and players must be careful to place heavy ones on the bottom and fragile ones on top so nobody gets hurt. Two of the games reward players for crushing groceries, which appear bruised and battered when crushed. Multiplayer mode requires players to connect to Game Center or Facebook to challenge friends, but includes only one game (compared to seven in Classic mode), so younger players with social media restrictions aren't missing out on much. In Classic mode, players can share high scores via the Game Center social network, but participation is optional.

What's it about?

Players drag groceries off a conveyor belt and place them into a brown paper bag, tapping to rotate items so they fit and taking care not to crush anything fragile. Players earn points, stars, and medals for completing various challenges within each level. Players can retry levels as they attempt to earn the three stars and two medals for each. Classic mode offers seven games with a lot of variation including puzzles and endless play. Multiplayer mode pits players against their Game Center and Facebook friends in a high-speed matching game.
