What parents need to know

Ease of play

The eight-page instruction manual, included as the first book in the app, explains features and how to use them. Kids of all ages will enjoy looking at or reading the books, but creating them is best left to older kids or parents.

Parents Need to Know

Parents need to know that Book Writer - eBook, PDF creator lets parents or kids create ebooks that can be shared as epub files or PDFs via email or iTunes. Images can be added to books from the camera roll, so some prep work is necessary to collect and save images and plan the text. Minimal customization of backgrounds, colors, or fonts is provided. Though older kids may enjoy creating ebooks using this app, parents of younger kids will find the most use for it in creating custom ebooks themselves to share with their little ones.

Engagement

The lack of background and text options limits choices for how kids can express themselves, so this isn't as engaging as it could be. The ebook creations are nice but not impressive.

Learning Approach

Book Writer gives kids an easy way to publish their own writing. Since kids share their voices in their creations, they'll likely go into more depth and transfer their learning into other areas.

Support

An eight-page manual explains the app's features and shows how to create a book. Easier sharing functions would be helpful.

Kids can learn to create and share their ideas and their writing using epublishing technology. They choose a book's shape; add text, images, and audio; and then publish the book by sharing it as an epub file, a PDF, or an iBook. Parents also can create books to share with younger kids; they might create a book about a child's baby days to share when a new sibling is born or create a book of their family's favorite stories. Reading and writing are learning essentials, and Book Writer - eBook, PDF creator makes it easy for kids to explore the writing process.

What's it about?

Kids or parents can use BOOK WRITER - EBOOK, PDF CREATOR to create ebooks or PDF documents with pictures and text. A user manual included as a book walks users through creating and saving a new book. Images from the camera roll, text, and audio (including voice and background music) can be added. Formatting options allow users to create simple books that can be viewed within the app, shared by email as PDFs, or saved to Google Drive, Dropbox, or Evernote as epub files.

Is it any good?

QUALITY

Other options for ebook creation are available, so it's hard to justify paying for what Book Writer offers. Slightly pricier apps (such as Book Creator for iPad or Kid in Story Book Maker) with more features are easier to use, and free apps (such as StoryKit) are comparable to what's offered in Book Writer -- although those free options aren't perfect, either. Book Writer - eBook, PDF creator is good for easily creating photo books with text or captions. Lengthier texts are a challenge because they have to be typed and edited in-app, as there's no option for importing text from Word via Google Drive or Dropbox (even though the epub books can be exported to those apps). An eight-page manual walks users through creating a book, but saving and exporting isn't very intuitive. To experience shared books as ebooks rather than PDF documents, readers either have to already have the app or download an epub reader.

Families can talk about...

  • Parents of young kids can create custom ebooks from favorite oral-tradition stories or about the kids themselves.

  • Try writing stories with your children, letting them take pictures while you add text, or vice versa, to create a fun family story.
