What’s It About?
CHARISMA - INTERACTIVE COMICS is a collection of interactive graphic novels in genres like science fiction, horror, and action. Users choose a story and then dive in as a character, interacting with other characters by answering their questions and prompts. The stories often suggest that users try using different answers to impact the story differently the next time around (e.g., a character suggests that you choose a particular genre of music when he asks you what your favorite type of music is). At the end of each chapter, players get a summary of their actions, how they could've answered differently, and how their answers prompted other characters to share more information. Comics currently available include "Sherlock Holmes and the Vampires of London," "Akademy," "Shadows of the Stix," and "Centaurus."
Is It Any Good?
If you've ever talked back to the characters in your favorite books, comics, TV shows, or movies, this is probably the experience for you. Charisma - Interactive Comics lets you join in on the fun and have your say in what happens, even if it doesn't really feel like you have a huge impact on the story. But it might be enough for fans of the medium to enjoy. There's lots of pressure on players to choose a certain course of action ("Next time try refusing to give a name ... "), and it often seems like input you provide is the "wrong" answer. There are also moments when your answers aren't accepted. For example, when you choose to order from a menu in a coffee shop, the game scolds you for your high-end taste in coffee. Things like that make the experience less pleasant than it otherwise could be. There are some fun aspects: Choosing who you want to pretend to be when you're answering questions is definitely kind of cool. All in all, Charisma - Interactive Comics is an enjoyable way to spend some time, even if it isn't perfect.
