What's It About?
COLOR QUEST AR is a platform where kids can use digital tools to color different characters and bring them to life on screen using augmented reality (AR). The app layers in trivia like health facts about the human body, fruits, and vegetables. Color Quest AR explicitly warns families to be careful and aware of their surroundings when using the augmented reality feature and encourages adult supervision. The home screen illustrates the collection of characters kids can color. The experience is sequenced; completing one character unlocks the next one. Upon tapping on the first character, a brief list of playing tips appears on the screen with a link to a video that provides a step-by-step guide on how to navigate the app. It shows little ones how to use the coloring tools and control the size of the image that appears on the screen. Once kids are happy with their creation, they press the magic wand icon to activate the AR feature. Scan a flat surface using the digital device and tap on the screen to watch the character come to life. The AR experience can be saved directly onto the device's camera roll as a photo or video by tapping on the corresponding icons on the screen. If there are complications with the scanning of a physical space, the app animates the characters using its own background. Each character is linked to a health fact associated with the human body, food, or the connection between both. As kids color characters in the collection, they'll win badges, like the Magic Wand and Magic Cape. Audio settings lets families control narration and background music.
Is It Any Good?
Kids will be inspired to explore different color combinations and will be thrilled to see their artistic creations come to life through augmented reality. Color Quest AR takes the digital coloring experience to another level by allowing kids to interact with their characters in their own physical environment. Navigating the app is simple, and many aspects are intuitive. The how-to video is an added bonus that ensures little ones learn how to navigate the app on their own. The visual and audio tutorial is comprehensive and covers nuances such as choosing shades of color, switching brush size, and pinching the screen to zoom out. Kids can access the tutorial at any time by tapping on the first character in the lineup, the heart. Another cool feature that promotes independence and accessibility is the narration function. Little ones will hear all prompts and health facts read aloud to them when it's on.
In addition to providing a platform for kids to color and express their creativity, this app also layers in opportunities to learn basic health facts about the human body and food. The facts are trivia-like but definitely promote a sense of curiosity and draw connections between how food impacts the body. Each character is linked to a fact. When kids revisit a character to try different color combinations, they'll hear the same fact again. Although the facts are quirky and interesting, they are limited, and the app's main emphasis is on coloring and AR. The photo and video features are a simple way for kids to memorialize their creativity and create content that they can watch at a later time or share with friends using their digital device. Kids can animate their characters at the park or at the grocery store. Seeing the characters they create move and dance in different places or with people they know will definitely keep kids entertained. The experience empowers kids to create content and explore creative possibilities. Overall, Color Quest AR is a fun app that gives little ones an opportunity to use their imagination, use their fingertips as coloring tools, and create content using their imagination and own physical space. Plus, they can learn health facts along the way! The app is completely free, and there aren't any in-app ads interrupting kids' experience, so with a little supervision while kids use AR, it can be a multifaceted experience for kids.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about different ways to promote health when playing with Color Quest AR. Talk about healthy habits that complement eating fruits and vegetables, such as getting enough sleep, drinking plenty of water, and staying active.
Discuss how to engage with augmented reality responsibly. Kids will love seeing their creation come to life in almost any physical environment; however, it's important that they are aware of their surroundings, to avoid injury. Kids may be inclined to walk or move while looking at their animation on the screen rather than watch where they are going.
