Ease of Play

The challenge in this game comes in that players have to be quick on their feet to solve the word puzzles quickly enough to take down the enemy creatures. This is an example of a game that's easy to understand but difficult to master, but any player will be able to improve with practice and focus.

As odd as it sounds, this is a violent word game. That is, as players solve word puzzles on the bottom of the screen, enemy creatures are shown being attacked on the top. The damage is shown in a still picture/icon with bursts and explosions signifying attacks. Each attack reduces the enemy's health bar and players must fully deplete that bar before their own time runs out.

What parents need to know

Parents need to know that Dungeon Scroll is a word game, with a twist. The twist is that the game is set in a series of dungeons, and players have to take down a variety of creatures (skeletons, bombs, snakes, etc.) along the way. Instead of attacking them with a normal set of weapons and magic spells, though, enemies are slowly defeated as players make their way through a word puzzle on the bottom of the screen.

Is it any good?

DUNGEON SCROLL is part word game, part "dungeon crawler." How many games can say that? This intriguingly unique juxtaposition of game mechanics makes it a refreshing and compelling experience. The dungeon-crawler aspect is not quite fully fleshed out and only exists as a reward for completing the word puzzles, but it still makes the intellectual part of the game more interesting. The idea of arranging jumbled letters to form words has been used again and again, but this game manages to turn it into something completely new.
