Friendly Plus for Facebook

Common Sense Media says

Well-done alternative to official FB apps.

What parents need to know

Ease of play

If you know how to navigate around Facebook, you'll have no trouble with this app.

Because the app gives users access to their Facebook accounts, it's possible that users will encounter violent content.

Because the app gives users access to their Facebook accounts, it's possible that users will encounter sexual content.

The app itself has no objectionable language -- but depending on who's on the friends list, that can change quickly.

Unlike Facebook, which has ads on the side of the page, this app does away with them. A similar, free version of the app does contain ads.

Drinking, drugs, & smoking

Because the app gives users access to their Facebook accounts, it's possible that users will encounter posts about drinking, drugs, or smoking.

Privacy & safety

Any actions taken on this app will appear on the user's Facebook page. Users should ensure their privacy settings are up to date. (You can't adjust those settings from within this app, but the app offers a quick link to the right page in a web browser.)

Parents Need to Know

Parents need to know that Friendly Plus for Facebook is an iPad-specific app that makes it easy to access and interact with the social networking site. Since Facebook does not have a dedicated app for the iPad, this is one of the simplest ways to keep your status updated. A recent update has added several missing features, including the ability to add photos, filter by friend list and type of update, and offers access to game feeds and requests.

Is it any good?

Facebook itself hasn't come out with an iPad app, but it might not need to. FRIENDLY PLUS FOR FACEBOOK had a lot of omissions in its initial version, but a series of recent updates has made this a very versatile tool for people who like to interact with the social network site via the device. The app's use of large fonts makes it easy to browse -- and eliminates the need for pinching and zooming the page. The layout is very natural, as well, making it easy to find the area of the site you're looking for. You're finally able to upload photos and filter your feeds -- and live-time updates are now a part of the service as well. People who play games on the site are still out of luck, though the app will kick you over to the iPad's web browser when you're in need of a FarmVille fix.
