Did we miss something on diversity?

Research shows a connection between kids' healthy self-esteem and positive portrayals in media. That's why we've added a new "Diverse Representations" section to our reviews that will be rolling out on an ongoing basis. You can help us help kids by suggesting a diversity update.

A lot or a little?

The parents' guide to what's in this app.

Educational Value

Kids can learn the names of letters in the English alphabet and practice letter recognition in Kids ABC Letters. The simple puzzles in which segments of letters are scrambled for kids to drag and snap in place to form the letter is almost too easy even for preschoolers. One game helps kids learn to identify letters by asking them to pick out one specific letter from inside words. The app doesn't teach the phonetic sounds of letters. Kids ABC Letters can be a good introduction to learning the alphabet, but it's not adaptable enough to hold kids' attention.

Ease of Play

The verbal and visual cues are both very clear, and the games are all simple enough to be nearly self-explanatory.

On the main screen, right next to the games, there's a section called "More Games" that takes players to the Android Market to buy the other apps developed by Intellijoy.

What parents need to know

Parents need to know that Kids ABC Letters is the first app in a series of preschool learn-to-read apps by the developer Intellijoy. This app focuses on letter names and shapes and basic letter recognition. Phonics and actual reading skills come in later apps. This app includes puzzles, a simple "go fish" letter recognition game, a section where a pleasant voice says a letter name as kids watch and listen (with no interactivity other than to move from one letter screen to the next) and a game where kids are prompted to find a letter in a word (Find the letter 'k' in the word "Ankle").

What's it about?

Kids choose one of four options for learning, including letter puzzles; a simple "go fish" game (in which the game shows a letter in a corner, and kids tap on a fishing pole when they see a fish go by on the screen with the same letter to "catch" it); a section where a voice says a letter name (with no interactivity other than that kids move from one letter screen to the next); and a game where kids are prompted to find a letter in a word. These are simple games for learning the simple concepts of naming and recognizing letters.

Is it any good?

For very young preschoolers who are ready to move past the ABC song, the colorful app KIDS ABC LETTERS is a solid first-time introduction into the world of learning the individual letters of the alphabet. This beginner's app in the preschool reading curriculum app series by Intellijoy keeps it simple for kids before they move onto phonics and beginning reading. The child-lock feature is also a nice addition, so kids won't inadvertently move out of playing on this app and onto other apps that may not be age-appropriate.

Talk to your kids about ...

  • Encourage kids to see letters all around them on signs, magazine or book covers, food boxes, and more.

  • Once your kid seems to have a good handle on naming the letters, gently introduce the concept that letters sound one way when naming them, and other ways (phonics) in words.
