What parents need to know

Educational value

Kids can learn how to enter and display mathematical expressions using a digital math keyboard. Creating complex expressions by hand or with more traditional software programs can be tricky. MathPad makes it easy and convenient to create a document that displays the expressions with variables and symbols that are nicely aligned. Teaching kids to use a digital note-taking tool is a great way to combine math and technology. MathPad is a useful tool for creating and sharing documents that contain mathematical expressions.

Ease of play

Learning how to use the features will take some time and is somewhat complicated.

Violence

The app links to YouTube for tutorials. There isn't any violence in the tutorials, but kids can search YouTube for content beyond MathPad.

Sex

The app links to YouTube for tutorials. There isn't any sexual content in the tutorials, but kids can search YouTube for content beyond MathPad.

Language

The app links to YouTube for tutorials. There isn't any iffy language in the tutorials, but kids can search YouTube for content beyond MathPad.

Consumerism

The information menu has links to the App Store, where users will find several of the developer's other apps for sale. A $4.99 in-app purchase is required to unlock all the features in the free version; you can also buy the "EDU" full version for $4.99.

Drinking, drugs, & smoking

The app links to YouTube for tutorials. There isn't any iffy content related to drinking, drugs, or smoking in the tutorials, but kids can search YouTube for content beyond MathPad.

Parents Need to Know

Parents need to know that MathPad is a digital note-taking tool that lets kids create mathematical expressions within documents. Kids use a special math keyboard that draws, resizes, and aligns characters so expressions are easier to read. Additional features include iCloud document storage, the ability to email and print documents in PDF format, and the ability to share documents with other MathPad users. It's worth noting that the free version of MathPad includes functionality for users to try some of the basic features. There is an in-app purchase option, which will upgrade users to the advanced features discussed in this review. There is also an option to simply purchase the app with all the features; this version is called MathPad EDU

What's it about?

MATHPAD opens as a large display screen with a few icons. The information icon is a great place to start, as it contains helpful information about features and links to resources including tutorial videos on how to use the app. Kids can choose the "How to Use" option to learn details about each feature for creating, modifying, and sharing documents. At the tap of a button, kids can start a new document and start adding expressions with one of two types of easily accessible keyboards: an expression keyboard and a text keyboard. Once kids are finished with a document, they can save it to the iCloud, email it as a PDF, copy it to the iPad clipboard, or share it with other MathPad users.

Is it any good?

QUALITY

MathPad has a very specific purpose: enable users to create, edit, and share documents with neatly aligned expressions. Kids will probably need some time to practice before becoming fluent with the tool, but the investment is worthwhile, and there's plenty of support from the developers. As a growing number of education tools transition from paper-and-pencil to digital platforms, it makes sense to undergo the same transition when it comes to note-taking.

Families can talk about...

  • Families can talk about why it's important for expressions to be neatly aligned and easy to read. Reinforce the importance of accuracy and legibility.

  • Encourage kids to watch the tutorial video and review the "How to Use" option before creating their first documents.
