What’s It About?
MONTY'S BACKYARD ADVENTURE invites kids into Monty's backyard, which he shares with a cat, a mouse, and some birds and frogs. Kids may need to find Monty's hiding place in the backyard after seeing him hide. They'll help Monty count clouds and find numbers in clouds. They'll find the toy Monty wants to play with most and throw it for him. Monty may need kids to help him as he assists his backyard friends, and he may even need a bath after having so much fun. The games appear randomly and after completing a few, kids are rewarded with decorations for Monty's doghouse and yard. The skills ramp up slowly as kids progress, but they do so in a natural way so that kids build upon previous skills.
Is It Any Good?
With a cute dog, darling backyard friends, and some gentle learning tossed in, Monty is likely to be a hit with the preschool and kindergarten set. Kids can't decide which game to play in Monty's Backyard Adventure as they just stream in a random order, but that's appropriate for this age as little ones often get stuck when asked to make a game choice. The games are simple and easy enough for most kids in the age bracket, although it would be helpful if parents had some control over the skill progression. Some of the games, specifically the cloud-counting activity, could use more correction so that kids understand that they have made an incorrect choice and why. But even so, Monty's Backyard Adventure is appealing. It's hard to resist playing with a fun-loving pup, and being able to choose how to decorate the backyard will be a great reward for many kids in the target age.
