What's It About?

Create a main account with MYKINCLOUD: FAMILY MINDFULNESS and then make up to 11 other profiles to be part of your social network. Tap on one of four icons on the bottom of the screen: A heart-shaped flower brings up the prompt "I am grateful for..." for users to finish and post their thoughts. A happy face allows users to choose an emoticon face and weather icon to past how they're feeling that day. A messing icon lets users write and post whatever message they want, and includes the option to attach a photo. And the lotus icon houses a collection of short yoga videos and guided mediation audio tracks. Tap the heart to mark any of these as favorites. All posts and completed yoga/meditations go into the feed on the main page for everyone in the private social network to see. On the main screen, there's also an icon to cycle through a collection of inspiring quotes. Activate alerts to receive notifications of new posts and reminders to check in.

This private social network can be a great way for kids to connect with nearby or far-away family and friends by focusing together on learning mindfulness techniques. myKinCloud: Family Mindfulness is a mix between a social network where users can post and chat about whatever they want, and a mental/emotional health guide for mindfulness. For the social network piece, it's nice to be able to create a private invitation-only network. On the mindfulness side, the yoga and meditation exercises are super accessible as they're bite-sized and kid friendly. Gratitude prompts are also a cool addition, and a great way to encourage users to regularly reflect on what their grateful for. The daily emotional check-in is the weakest section, with just a few limited choices for expressing how you're feeling. myKinCloud: Family Mindfulness is marketed as a tool for parents and kids to use together, yet some families may feel uncomfortable about connecting with each other through a device. And, kids must have regular access to a device to participate, which also may not make it a good fit for some families. On the other hand, this could be a great tool for helping kids communicate with far-flung loved ones or encouraging uncommunicative teens to connect with caregivers in a nonthreatening way. All in all, myKinCloud: Family Mindfulness has some great content and a fun platform for sharing with family and friends.

Talk to Your Kids About ...

  • Families can talk about the yoga and mediation exercises in myKinCloud: Family Mindfulness. How do you feel after completing them? Which ones do you like best? Why?

  • Talk to your kids about social networks. This one is private, but it's a good place to establish some ground rules. What's okay to say and what's not okay? What are the differences between a private, invitation-only social network and a public one?

  • Even if you post what you're doing, do the various exercises together and turn them into opportunities for off screen reflection and sharing. Try incorporating other mindfulness practices into your family's routine.
