What’s It About?
OMOGURU provides users, primarily teens and adults, with access to a library of over 45,000 e-books in English as part of the Project Gutenberg library, a digital library that offers free access to public domain books. This library includes classic books from authors such as Jane Austen, Voltaire, Dante Alighieri, and William Shakespeare. Books are downloaded to the app, for free, within seconds. There are 200+ books in Croatian as part of the E-Lektire library, as well. You can resize text, realign it, adjust spacing and letter size, or make text bold or italicized. Also, there are 11 different background colors to use. Those who have dyslexia can customize settings to highlight letters such as b/d, p/q, in order to reduce reversals. Depending on your reading style, you can swipe or scroll when changing pages. A reading line is also present, which highlights the text in a left to right fashion to assist with reading speed. And, you can save your preferences. Users will need to upgrade to a paid version in order to access premium features of the app, such as using the camera on their digital device to snap a photo of a book or text, then upload it into the app and customize the font.
Is It Any Good?
The combination of free books and lots of ways to make reading easier makes this app a great resource. Buying classic books can be expensive, and having access to 45,000 free, digital e-books in itself is a huge bonus for those who want to save a little money by not having to purchase physical books. The paid version of Omoguru can be pricey, but for those needing assistance with modifying text of other books or written documents because of a reading disability, it might be helpful in certain circumstances. Kids with dyslexia and other reading challenges will benefit from access to use of the dyslexic font, a reading line to help their speed, and access to highlighting letters within the text to avoid common letter reversals as they explore classic literature.
