What parents need to know

Ease of play

The controls consist of two on-screen virtual joysticks. The app has an interactive tutorial that helps you understand how to play, and customized settings that allow you to move and/or swap the joystick locations. The challenge lies with the virtual joysticks, which provide no visceral feedback as you play. It's easy to slide your fingers off the joystick without realizing it. The campaign mode has three levels of gameplay, but without mastery of the controls, even the easiest level is difficult.

Violence

This arcade app involves shooting at other objects, but they are abstract shapes.

You can upload scores to the web, but you can enter any nickname to go with your score. iPhone and iPad users can opt in to Apple’s Game Center to track scores and achievements, and for some games, challenge friends. With Game Center, players can send and receive friend requests using an email address or Game Center nickname, revealing the first and last name associated with each party’s Apple ID and, in the case of email requests, the sender’s email address.

Parents Need to Know

Parents need to know that PewPew 2 is an old-style arcade space shooter, similar in styling to Asteroids. Players shoot at objects, but they are abstract shapes. Players choose between Campaign Mode and Infinity Mode (with a variety of challenges). Navigate through the game board on each level, blasting away obstacles and enemies, while keeping your shields intact. As you progress, you unlock better ships to battle with. You must successfully complete each level in Campaign Mode before moving on to new levels. This review is based on the Android version of the app.

QUALITY

PEWPEW 2 is an app with simple graphics, simple gameplay, and a high nostalgia value. Kids who are used to flashier games may be less than impressed. On the other hand, the amount of onscreen action will appeal to kids who enjoy traditional arcade gaming. The virtual controls may also frustrate younger or less-experienced gamers, but the visual impact is engaging enough to keep kids trying to work it out.
