What’s It About?
In STATE OF SURVIVAL WALKING DEAD, you'll oversee (and grow) a small band of survivers in a zombie-infested world. That means your forces will be clearing out hordes of the undead and building up a settlement of your own, training troops, researching the virus that has transformed the dead and meeting up, from time to time, with characters from The Walking Dead TV show (specifically, Daryl). The game balances play between battles and resource management/building and there's a large world to explore. You're also able to form alliances with other players to fight bigger battles, though that's not an essential part of gameplay.
Is It Any Good?
While this is a survival strategy action game, it feels relatively generic and unimpressive for anyone but the biggest fans of either format, or of the TV show itself. Your enjoyment of State of Survival Walking Dead will likely depend on how important story is to you. If it's a critical part, you'll give up quickly, as the characters in cutscenes are cliches with voice actors who put no effort into the job. If you can get past that (and, admittedly, it's tough), there's a lot more to like. State of Survival is hardly revolutionary. It borrows heavily from the RTS genre and throws in a dash of action to keep players engaged. But it's also a game that manages the various tasks well, gently nudging players when there's something to do, but not getting in their face. The result is a game where you always feel like there's a reason to keep playing, but you don't feel pressure to do so.
Zombie survival is fast becoming a standard gaming format in the gaming world -- and State of Survival doesn't make it any more welcome, even with the assistance of The Walking Dead. But the game balances two genres well and, when it comes down to the gameplay itself, it manages to stand on its own, even if it's not a game you'll find yourself craving.
