A lot or a little?

The parents' guide to what's in this app.

Educational Value

Kids can learn about sequencing, sorting, and problem solving with the five activities in Trucks HD. For example, in the Bulldozer & Dump Truck game, kids have to figure out that they must first use the dump truck to create a pile of dirt and then dump it to where the bulldozer is. After, they can use the bulldozer to carry the dirt away. Although the activity is simple, kids have to think about the problem, what needs to be done, and in what order it should be done in. The activities in Trucks HD let kids problem-solve as they learn about vehicles in everyday-life situations.

Ease of Play

Menu navigation is intuitive, and big icons make for easy tapping by young kids. The app offers basic verbal instruction when appropriate, but most of the action is for kids to figure out what to do.

What parents need to know

Parents need to know that Trucks HD is a fun, interactive app for young kids, especially those who love cars and trucks. Like other great apps from developer Duck Duck Moose, Trucks HD may seem like a "just for fun" game, but kids can learn about everyday automobile situations and the roles trucks have in routine life. Trucks HD is a good app for parents to play with their kid because they can easily continue the conversation by connecting the themes back to everyday life.

What's it about?

The activities in Truck HD take kids through a step-by-step process of automobile-related activities. Kids can easily choose from the five mini-games (Carwash, Tow Truck, Garbage & Recycling, Bulldozer & Dump Truck, and Car Parade), and play through the sequence as many times as they want. In each activity, kids have to discover the interactive elements and how to use them to move the sequence forward -- from something as simple as tapping on the car to see what it does, to correctly sorting the recycling and garbage.

Is it any good?

Trucks HD is a good app for young kids, with engaging interactive features (though kids who like trucks will want to play more than those without a strong interest in trucks). Kids will like how the activities mirror real life situations, so they can pretend like they are grown-ups fixing a flat tire or getting a car wash. Parents can appreciate functional nature of the activities that make their kid think about the sequence of events. For example, if you roll over something sharp, you'll get a flat tire, and then have to get a tow truck and get the tire fixed. The app has minimal instructions where needed, but the fun is in figuring out what needs to be done.

Talk to your kids about ...

  • Relate the activities back to your family’s everyday routines.

  • Next time you're out, look for the different kinds of cars and trucks seen in the activities. Work together to find them all.

  • Point out the sequence of events in real-life activities, such as making dinner or getting ready for bed.
