What's the Story?
A FLICKER OF HOPE: A STORY OF MIGRATION is beautifully told through the parallel stories of the butterflies' journey and Lucía's migrant farmer father. Every year Lucía watches with fascination as the monarch butterflies embark on their annual northward migration. This year, the butterflies' journey takes on special significance as Lucía's Papá will also be traveling north to look for work. He promises to return home guided by their winged ancestors, the monarchs, which leaves Lucía with a heart full of hope. "Papá follows the harvest," and Lucia waits patiently while weeks turn to months until one day, the cold and crisp air returns, her community prepares for the monarchs' homecoming, and a flicker of hope brings Papá home.
Is It Any Good?
This poignant yet beautiful picture book touches on important themes like family, migration, and the wonders of nature. A Flicker of Hope: A Story of Migration offers a relatable yet impactful narrative that humanizes the plight of Mexican migrant workers and sensitively addresses challenges faced by Mexican families. An author's note at the end teaches readers about the migration of butterflies, talks about The Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage site in Mexico, and explains how monarch butterflies relate to the history and culture of the Indigenous Mazahua people of the Michoacán region of Mexico. Encouraging empathy, the story gives readers insight into the migrant experience, helping readers better understand that oftentimes, "harvesting in a field away from home is the only option" for family members who must move away for extended periods of time to support their families. A glossary at the end of this book also provides English translation to a list of Spanish vocabulary words used throughout the book, including Spanish words like "Ocoxal," "sonrisa," "monarcas," and "guitarra." A note on the last page explains how readers can help as global citizens and shares additional learning resources. This compassionate and insightful picture book may spark curiosity and serve as a fantastic segue into a more in-depth study of monarch butterflies and human migration.
