What's the Story?

As BEA WOLF opens, Treeheart stands as a sanctuary for young "mallow-munchers," warriors making merry, and spilling soda. Then comes the fun-destroying Mr. Grindle, who can change kids into boring teens and adults with a single touch. It will take a hero, a savior whose will is unbreakable and whose appetite for mischief is unbeatable. It will take... the mighty Bea Wolf.

Satire is difficult to do well, but this adaptation of a very old tale hits the mark. In Bea Wolf, writer Zach Weinersmith and artist Boulet concoct a saga suitable for a vast range of readers -- basically, everyone who loves to laugh. It's clever enough to appeal to kids whose imaginations and flair for the absurd are still intact and to adults who will be cajoled into remembering the magic of childhood and pulled in by the humor. Adult's familiar with Beowolf will appreciate how closely the author has adapted the original -- maintaining the kennings, alliteration, and rhythms. The black and white art is stunning and richly layered. Take time to study details like book titles in the backgrounds of pictures as no feature was chosen randomly. Readers of all ages will be richly rewarded with reading and re-reading this wonderful graphic novel.
