What's the Story?

BEYOND THE ISLE OF THE LOST, the Red Queen of "Off with their heads!" fame rules the realm of Wonderland with an iron fist and a mean spirit. Nobody's supposed to have any fun anywhere -- least of all Red, the Queen's 16-year-old red-headed daughter, who's supposed to grow up as her mom's mini-me. The Tea Ceremony, at which Red will issue her first joy-busting decrees, is right around the corner, and Red's days are full of oppressive stuff like etiquette, protocol, and her mom's screaming fits. But Red, who's always been a bit of a rebel, has her doubts -- which get stronger when she becomes friends with schoolmates Chester and Ace, and they decide Wonderland could use a bit more fun. The Queen, however, sees it differently.

Disney's Descendants franchise romps off to Wonderland, introducing a new villain kid in a wild, cartoonish, cliff-hanging prequel to the Rise of Red movies, featuring the Red Queen's teen daughter. As elsewhere in the series, Beyond the Isle of the Lost features an over-the-top villain from the Disney empire, and the efforts of the villain's kid to have friends, fun, and a life that isn't cruel and violent. Characters tend to be thin and one-note, but a promising friendship adds new dimensions and possibilities to their lives.
