What's the Story?
In BOOK LOVERS, Nora is a consummate New Yorker who considers herself to be the villain in any romance. She's not the woman men stay with, but the ice queen girlfriend they break up with after meeting their actual true love. But that's OK: She has her sister Libby, her nieces, and her job as a cutthroat literary agent. She loves her city life, but she loves her sister more. So when Libby begs her to take a girl's trip to a small town, where Nora can unwind and find another, softer side of herself—and maybe a handsome country doctor to melt her heart—she agrees. But no sooner has Nora stepped foot in Sunshine Falls when she bumps into her nemesis, the handsome, broody literary editor, Charlie, who's as much a New Yorker as Nora. Will Nora settle into country life, or can only a city boy crack open the heart of an ice queen?
Is It Any Good?
Funny, charming, and well written, this romance is yet another hit by bestselling romance writer Emily Henry. The literary framing and subversion of classic romance tropes make Book Lovers one of Henry's best. Her well-crafted metaphors bring beauty to her writing and help readers connect more deeply to the characters' emotions. The story isn't just a steamy enemies-to-lovers romance, it's also a look at what happens when people sacrifice themselves for others. The depth to the characters and their emotional journeys is part of what makes this story so enjoyable.
There is a decent amount of family drama that interferes with the romance plot at times, and side characters occasionally fall flat, but overall, this book is a pleasure. Both Nora and Charlie are ultimately likable, and it's as easy to root for their happily-ever-after as it is to chuckle at their witty banter.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about the idea of a "perfect" romantic hero or heroine. How are Nora and Charlie's opinions of themselves negatively affected by the popular culture stereotype of what makes someone hero material?
What do you think about the amount of alcohol the adults drink? Do you feel this represents true adult behavior? Why do you think the author added this to the book?
Nora shows bravery several times in this book. Do you think her growing bravery changes her life? If so, how?
