What's the Story?
In FIVE WORDS THAT ARE MINE, the main character, a school-aged girl named Mia, discovers the power of language when she finds five unique words that genuinely speak to who she is—words like "relampago," or lightning, which feel good to her. But when Mia has trouble learning a cool new trick on her skateboard, "ugly words" pop into her head—words that won't leave her alone. Words like "fail." But are these words really hers, too? Mia knows who she is; if she keeps trying, she'll find her five words and learn to push the words that don't belong aside. When Mia feels defeated, Papi's warm hugs gently remind her that "a fall is not a fail" and that she's capable of doing anything she sets her mind to!
Is It Any Good?
This inspiring picture book is a vibrant celebration of expressing yourself and self-discovery. Five Words That Are Mine weaves in cultural elements and highlights the beauty of strong father-daughter bonds. Mia is curious and smart, brave, and creative, but sometimes she lets self-doubt kick in when she allows herself to listen to what others say about her. Papi serves as a loving and wise role model, embracing Mia's feelings, encouraging her passions, gently reminding her that she can do hard things, and empowering her to find self-love. This fun-loving picture book shares unique stories through relatable, brown-skinned characters. Rivera Sonda's lively and colorful artwork beautifully complements the narrative, making this a delightful read for kids and families. A glossary at the back of the book translates the Spanish words sprinkled throughout and explains the skateboard lingo used in this book.
