What's the Story?
When FOR LAMB begins, 16-year-old Lamb is living with her mother, Marion, and brother, Simeon, in Mississippi. They're Black, and they deal daily with the indignity and fear of the Jim Crow laws and customs of the 1940s. Marion and Simeon chafe against the restrictions in different ways, which sometimes results in conflict between them. Lamb keeps to herself and escapes by reading books. A lonely White girl starts to bond with Lamb over books, and they secretly establish a friendship. This pulls both of their families into a series of events that ultimately leads to tragedy.
Is It Any Good?
This heartbreaking book creates an intimate sense of what living under Jim Crow was like for Black people. In For Lamb, Lesa Cline-Ransome uses alternating first-person voices to capture the story's emotion. Each narrator -- 16-year-old Lamb, her mother, her brother, and members of their extended family -- reveals his or her distinct pain and unique coping mechanisms for the horrific situation they must live in, from laying low to plotting escape, from resignation to revenge, and from religion to dissident politics. Cline-Ransome draws scenes from historical events and character names from lynching victims on the record. This is a good book for adults to read along with teens -- especially if they have similar painful family histories to share -- and an important read for any teen seeking to understand U.S. history more deeply.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about the theme of courage in For Lamb. What is the relationship between courage and reasonable fear? In choosing to act, how do you determine the difference between courage and recklessness?
What values, traits, or ideas do you think allow the characters in For Lamb to persevere in their attempts to change their lives, not just endure them?
The author switches among the characters' points of view, but she sometimes has them use the exact same words. Find a few examples of this. Why do you think the author does this? How does this technique affect the empathy you experience for the characters?
