This is a gripping and tense spy thriller that skillfully blends in elements of historical fiction and superpower fantasy. Foul Heart Huntsman picks up shortly after the events of Foul Lady Fortune, and reading the books in orderis definitely helpful. It's loosely based on Shakespeare's As You Like It, and may encourage viewers to read it or watch an adaptation.

Three couples come to the forefront, and all six characters take turns in the spotlight. This probably has something to do with the whopping 560-page length. But the suspense, tension, twists, turns, and compelling characters keep the pages turning. The ending is sweetly satisfying, even though we know that there are more dark times to come.

Talk to Your Kids About ...

  • Families can talk about the violence in Foul Heart Huntsman. Is it too much? Is reading about it different from seeing it in other media like TV shows, videos, games, etc.? If so, how? If not, why?

  • How do the three couples use teamwork to accomplish their goals and missions? Are some better at it than others? And how do the courage and perseverance of the characters affect their actions?

  • Have you read any of Chloe Gong's other books? Which did you like the best? If you haven't read them, would you like to now?
