What's the Story?
FURY OF THE DRAGON GODDESS picks up where City of the Plague God left off. Wishes have consequences, and this acton-packed adventure makes them clear. Fourteen-year-old Sik Aziz gets his hands on the mythic tablet of destiny and uses it to get his brother Mo back, but he didn't anticipate the fall-out of this choice. Sik didn't mean to alter the whole history of the universe. Can he set things right without causing it all to disintegrate?
Is It Any Good?
Wishes can be dangerous, as this action-packed fantasy proves. In Fury of the Dragon Goddess, author Sarwat Chadda assembles a dynamic cast of characters of gods and monsters to sort out the chaos of an altered universe. Slick dialogue and arresting world-building will please the target audience, but there's deeper work being done here, too. The author weaves into this appealing adventure the realities of discrimination against Muslims, intolerance to outsiders, and the theft of cultural items by Western countries. With care and sensitivity, this story shows readers both ugly and hopeful sides of humanity and invites them toward the positive.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about how Fury of the Dragon Goddess uses Mesopotamian myths to comment on present-day issues. What does Sik learn about himself by learning about Islam?
Why is his parents' deli so important to Sik? What does it take to succeed in a family business?
Why might it be dangerous to change the past? What unexpected results might occur?
Sik is grateful to have his brother back. How does gratitude help him keep going? Where do you think Sik finds courage? How do characters work as a team to prevent the end of the world? What can these character strengths teach you about facing obstacles in your own life?
