What's the Story?

Kids find much to do at the public library in I'M SO HAPPY YOU'RE HERE. Children and their caregivers arrive at the library, greeted by an enthusiastic librarian. They are shown how the library is a place where everyone always belongs—kids, parents, abuelas, and families with a home and those without a home. Clearly stated is the fact that "We love books, but guess what? The library is so much more." Shown are many activities and programs such doing puzzles, chess, gardening, baking, story time, and getting a library card. The story concludes, "You having your best day at the library—that's what I call library joy."

The public library is important not only for its books but for the many activities and programs it offers and for providing a place of belonging to the entire community. With unbridled enthusiasm, that's what the librarian has to say in I'm So Happy You're Here. Kids might hear this book at story time and appreciate all they can do at their library. Or kids might hear it at school and later ask at home to be taken to the library. This picture book is message-driven and therefore somewhat flat, but it's a sweet, colorful ode to library joy, and to the books, activities, programs, friends, and sense of belonging kids can find at their library.
