What's the Story?

As LAWN BOY opens, 23-year-old Mike Muñoz quits his landscaping job and wonders what will happen next. Before he knows it, he's living in his mother's shed and applying to every job in town, no matter how menial. What he's passionate about is lawn sculpting, but no one wants to pay him to do it. As he explores what's next, with few talents or opportunities, he contemplates what success might mean and tries to support his family and figure out how to build the life he actually wants.

The American Dream is elusive, but this rollicking comic novel does a great job of chasing it. Jonathan Evison, author of All About Lulu and West of Here, poignantly and hilariously concocts a tale of underemployment, following Mike through a series of minor triumphs and major humiliations. Relatable, authentic characters, sharp class commentary, and tender moments of human connection and self-discovery combine in this immensely readable story. Sophisticated teen readers will enjoy the witty-but-profane dialogue and the well-choreographed plotting. This novel is a definite winner.
