What's the Story?

NO ONE LEAVES THE CASTLE. Never mind how they all got there or what their business might be: An angry wizard has put a giant magical bubble around the whole place, trapping them inside. And then he gets himself murdered. And then the bubble starts shrinking and is sure to crush them all. The Lilac, a mysterious 14-year-old bounty hunter, and her BFF, Dulcinetta the bard, recognize that finding the murderer and undoing the spell is their only hope. Young baron Kade, who wants to forsake nobility for a life of magic, may be able to help, but his sister, Araminta, whose main concern is keeping her trouble-prone family out of trouble, isn't so sure. Complicating matters is the fact that just about everybody has secrets from everybody else, and most of them are stealing, blackmailing, or generally conniving. And the bubble keeps getting smaller.

Christopher Healy is in fine form in this wacky adventure about the many perils of a teen bounty hunter and her singing sidekick, including murderers, schemers, thieves, magic, and horrible parents. No One Leaves the Castle till it all gets resolved, which is hard to do, since everybody's keeping secrets, lying, and conniving; the murder victim's corpse keeps disappearing; and they're all about to be crushed by a magical bubble. Stress is high, the foolery is over the top, slapstick is frequent, and plot twists are plentiful. But, laughs aside, there's a lot to like in lead characters/sometimes rivals The Lilac and Minty as they struggle to escape their preplanned lives, take their own paths, and actually accomplish something good.
