What's the Story?
OWL BY MYSELF follows a determined young owl who wakes up ready to prove they can handle the day without help. Owl tackles ordinary kid tasks like room cleaning, getting dressed, making breakfast, packing a backpack, and tying shoes, though it looks like Owl's confidence is a bit ahead of their skills. At school, Owl discovers other things to do alone while still being part of a group, helping classmates, playing with friends, and listening to the teacher. Exhausted at by bedtime, Owl has learned some valuable lessons about doing things by owl by themselves and asks for help getting to sleep.
Is It Any Good?
This cozy picture book turns the familiar preschool declaration "I can do it by myself!" into a charming, repeatable joke that's somehow also supportive and kind. With minimal text and tons of engaging details on each page, Pete Oswald's Owl by Myself delights: Kids can spot the toothpaste, clutter, too-full backpack, and other visual punch lines before Owl notices them. The story is funny without bringing any shame to the idea of kids trying to do things on their own, and it reassures readers without heavy-handed messages. The book's strongest theme is that independence develops through practice, mistakes, and loving support, and offers lots of openings for parents and kids to talk about how to handle all of these skills in their own lives and houses.
