What's the Story?

SCORPION DEEP is the name of the sea god that Jonathan's grandfather warned him never to say in earshot of the sea. But as Jonathan's friends prepare to leave for college, Jonathan realizes he'll be left behind, forever obeying his violent, overbearing father. So one night, he completes the ritual to wake a god, making a wish in hopes he'll never feel unwanted again. But once Scorpion Deep is summoned, will Jonathan find solace, or will he wish he knew how to put the god back to sleep?

The lush imagery and brutal characterization bring this tale of dark gods and angry seas to life. Scorpion Deep is another haunting book by C.G. Drews, who excels at writing stories of damaged people who fall in love with the monstrous. Jana Heidersdorf's creepy-beautiful drawings of mythical sea creatures are scattered throughout the book, adding to the rich visual fabric of the story. While the book is immersive and generally well-crafted, the elaborate, poetic prose can feel heavy, making a fairly clear, though intense, story longer than needed.

Amongst the vivid language is a compelling story of someone who has never felt safe enough to learn who they really are outside of what others perceive them to be. The main character's struggle with identity, sexuality, friendship, and family will resonate with teens who are also exploring their own identity and sense of self. The subplot around what it means to be a monster and to be human will also speak to many young adults.
