What's the Story?

THAT'S NOT MY NAME begins with a teenage girl waking up bloody and battered on the side of a road. Fortunately, a police car drives by and finds her. But she has no idea who she is, where she lives, or how old she is. Hours later, a man shows up at the police station claiming she's his daughter, Mary. Wayne Boone has pictures of her on his phone and a school ID. So Mary goes home with him to a fishing cabin in the woods. Hours away, in another town in Oregon, a teenage boy named Drew has become the prime suspect in the disappearance (and probable murder) of his girlfriend, Lola. His explanation, that she simply got out of his car and decided to walk home alone is rejected by almost everyone in town. As Mary settles into a new/old life, red flags begin to appear. She has two frightening allergy attacks after eating eggs and strawberries. Why would a father not know that? Wayne lets her know there are "rules" involving how she should dress and reading "clean" books. And memories are beginning to come back. Breaking curfew, softball games, homecoming, and a strong memory of a mother who, despite what Wayne has told her, is definitely not dead. When Drew finally confesses the truth about what happened the night Lola disappeared, he's able to enlist Lola's best friend, Amanda, and his best friend, Max, to investigate a recent sighting of Lola that came in on a tip line. Will Drew finally find Lola … and could she be Mary?

The novel has two page turning storylines that could easily stand on their own before coming together in a truly shocking, never-saw-that-coming ending. That's Not My Name has a "made for the movies" quality that's certain to pull in readers who aren't mystery or thriller fans. For readers who are, they may be confident they know how the story will play out... until they get to the final chapter. There are also serious themes for readers to explore—why lying and keeping a secret to protect yourself from embarrassment is never the right choice and how a seemingly innocent decision (Lola's walking home alone) can have tragic consequences.

Talk to Your Kids About ...

  • Families can talk about the part Mary's courage and Drew's perseverance played in It's Not My Name. Can you have courage without also being determined or have perseverance without courage?

  • Why do so many "kidnap" stories feature teenage girls and not boys? What makes writers believe girls are more vulnerable?

  • What do you think motivated Drew the most—finding Lola or proving his innocence?
