What's the Story?

WHAT WE DID TO SURVIVE begins in the Mexican resort town of Puerto Vallarta. High school senior Hannah has been invited by her best friend Emmy's parents to join them for trip over spring break. It will be a final getaway before Hannah heads off to nursing school and Emmy on a long saved for trip around the world. The only downside to this otherwise perfect invitation is that Emmy's older brother, Jackson, will be coming. Hannah's had an unrequited crush on him for ten years and in such close quarters, they'll be no way to avoid him. At the resort, Hannah and Emmy meet Ben, a rich "incredibly good looking male version of Emmy." Hannah's not impressed but Emmy's immediately smitten. When Ben suggests chartering a private sailboat, Hannah isn't sure Emmy's parents will agree. But they do—if Jackson comes along. When they arrive at the marina, they're told all the charters have been cancelled because of a storm that's due to arrive by the afternoon. Not a problem Ben tells them, he's found a private sailboat willing to take them. Jackson's adamant he's not getting on some random guy's boat, but Emmy and Ben prevail and the boat sets off. What they thought would be a relaxing day of sailing takes a terrifying turn as they see the storm approaching. When they go looking for Captain Keith, they find him drunk below deck. He and Ben get into a bloody knock down drag out fight that ends with Captain Keith dead and Ben unrepentant and threatening. They're now stranded and a second storm soon overtakes them. When an island is spotted, some will make it ashore alive but not everyone will survive to come home.

Lally puts a stormy, character driven, and sometimes violent spin on the well worn "teens in jeopardy" story. What We Did to Survive isn't all about discovering who did it, so the novel can really explore the characters themselves. Storylines about the opposites attract friendship between Hannah (sensible) and Emmy (impulsive) and Hanna's "stupid" crush on Jackson never feel like add ons and blend seamlessly into the book's page-turning intensity.

Talk to Your Kids About ...

  • Families can talk about the choice Hannah and Jackson made in What We Did To Survive to get on the boat and not trust their better judgment. How do you decide when to say "no" to something a close friend wants you to do?

  • Hannah survived to tell the story because she never ever gave up. Is determination a quality that comes naturally to some people or is perseverance something you have to work to achieve?

  • How important is the setting to a great thriller? Can a story set in a quiet suburban neighborhood be as spine tingling as one set in an exotic locale?
