This captivating look into the secrets and scandals of an elite boarding school will appeal to older teens and adults. Finding friendship, abuses of privilege, and the general messiness of life are well-rendered in The Academy. Authors Elin Hilderbrand and Shelby Cunningham have written a well-paced story with multi-dimensional characters that have intriguing intentions. A novel rich with thought-provoking themes, symbolism, and entertainment.

Talk to Your Kids About ...

  • Families can talk about the effects of gossip and secrecy in The Academy. Someone created the Zip Zap app in order to spill the secrets of Tiffin's staff and students. What damage does the app cause? Is gossip always harmful? What secrets should have come to light, if any?

  • Friendship and support are more themes to explore in The Academy. Why is it important that Charley makes friends at Tiffin? What types of friendships does Davi have at the beginning of school versus the end of school?

  • Elitism and privilege are other themes throughout The Academy. In what ways is elitism displayed in some of the characters? How does privilege play a role in the outcome and consequences at the end?

  • Gossip is a critical and ancient form of communication that can help people and groups build trust, share community, and find out about others. Since it'll always be a part of the way we communicate, what can you do to minimize any potential harms?
