What's the Story?

THE GATHERING TABLE follows a young boy as he joins his family members at a particular table for meals throughout the year. As the seasons change, the family gathers under the same protective trees to celebrate births, weddings, and holidays. Familial love, a gay couple's union, Black pride, hope for the future, gratitude for freedom, and more are all celebrated here. Everyone at the table adds a unique presence and sense of value.

This heartfelt story will help children learn and adults remember the value of togetherness and family traditions. The Gathering Table shows how regularly gathering to share a meal with your family can be a source of love, stability, and acceptance. London Ladd's bold-colored, mixed-media illustrations show a vibrant family and community in the southern United States through its people, foods, and traditions. Antwan Eady's evocative prose communicates love, gratitude, pride, and Black joy on every page. It's a lovely reminder that everyone brings something unique to the table—literally and figuratively. The author and illustrator subtly emphasize the connection of culture and ancestry, inviting readers into a world that feels special and warm.
