What's the Story?
THE GODS WILL SING OUR SONG follows teens Violet Aratani, an intelligent and creative person, and Ren Hamada, a hard-edged but dedicated family man, as they navigate a treacherous Japanese internment camp during Word War II. They face many hardships and turmoils given the American government's unfounded fear of Japanese immigrants' and Japanese-Americans' disloyalty. Yet despite all the unrest, Ren and Violet feel an immediate connection and keep find themselves in each others' paths, helped by magical, ancient Japanese relics passed down to them from their fathers. But the relics also give them the ability to see a magical being, a yōkai, for what he truly is; with this sight, Violet and Ren discover another danger within their camp and must do whatever they can to keep themselves, their families, and their community safe from all threats.
Is It Any Good?
This informative and entertaining story is also beautifully written and thought-provoking. Enchanting and fresh, The Gods Will Sing Our Song is teen literature at its finest. Author Autumn Krause confronts the difficult history of Japanese internment camps and how people there were treated, capturing loss upon loss upon loss, but the characters have distinct and compelling voices and share profound sentiments. Krause creates levels of depth by asking hard questions about life and love and the use of Japanese folklore as a frame gives a fantasy texture to the story, amping up the sense of magic. A truly phenomenal read!
