What's the Story?

In THE MAGICAL SNOWFLAKE, Ori and her friends are playing outside on a blistery winter day, with no snow in sight. Ori feels inspired by her anticipation and desire for snow, when she looks up to the sky and makes a wish. Just then, a magical snowflake falls from the sky and lands on Ori's nose, before bouncing to her shoulder. The snowflake seems to tell Ori to follow it's lead. As more snow falls, Ori confidently encourages more friends and neighbors to join her. Grown-ups begin to follow Ori and the other children through the town, as they hold hands and enjoy the frosty night. When the magical snowflake rises in the air, at the center of town, the community comes together to form a circle and celebrate the magic of the winter season with singing, "We wish you a merry winter" and dancing. The snowflake remains present in the community all winter long.

This is a delightful and cheery read-aloud book for families. The Magical Snowflake is an inclusive story that celebrates the magic of the winter season, instead of any one winter holiday. This focus helps to drive home the story's message of friendship and community. This joyful story will captivate young readers and Erin K. Robinson's soft yet vibrant illustrations are beautiful to look at, they transport you to the snowy day. Released posthumously, Bernette Ford did not disappoint loyal fans with her last book. The story truly highlights the beauty of a diverse community having a shared magical experience, during the most wonderful time of the year.

  • Ori's friends and neighbors go sledding, build a snowman, and sing & dance in the snow. What's your favorite thing to do on a snowy day? If it doesn't snow where you live, what special things do you do on days the weather is bad?

  • Why is Ori grateful that her wish came true? How does being grateful make you feel? What are you grateful for today?

  • The Magical Snowflake stayed in Ori's town all winter. What do you think it represents?
