What's the Story?
A new, tiny, female truck rolls into the construction site in THREE CHEERS FOR KID MCGEAR! She's loaded with helpful attachments (jackhammer, grapple hooks, power driver, scoop, forklift, and more) but gets left behind with the five older big trucks go off to work. But when a couple of them fall down a slippery hillside and call for help, little Kid McGear has what it takes to rescue them. She works with a team of the other trucks to pull them out, and the whole crew finally sees her worth. The conclusion: "SIX friends in the construction yard/ big and small, all working hard .../ each one greater than they seem,/ because they're working as a team."
Is It Any Good?
This empowering story of a little kid saving older, more experienced crew members, is full of excitement, suspense, and positive messages about teamwork, bravery, and problem solving. It's a refreshing example of a girl breaking into a previously all-male workplace. And Ford's glorious art in red, yellow, and orange earth tones gives a warm glow to this long, dramatic day from sun up to sunset.
Three cheers for Three Cheers for Kid McGear! -- a triumph of girl power and gear power. It shows what you can accomplish when you have the right tools -- and the right girl -- to get the job done.
