What's the Story?
TOM NANCY: THE SHEEP WHO SWAPPED BRAINS WITH A BOY begins on a farm where a talking sheep lures the farmer's son, Felix, to a barn with a mysterious machine inside. The sheep explains that it's a "brain-swapping machine," and proposes that they see if it works and swap brains for a day, then switch back that night. "I've always wanted to know what it's like to be a person," the sheep says. The machine does work: Felix is turned into a sheep and discovers the charms of eating grass in his pasture and talking with other farm animals. While the sheep, who now appears as Felix, enjoys eating sandwiches at school and having dinner and dessert with Felix's parents. He has such a great time being human, he refuses to switch back at the end of the day. But when the school principal tells him he has to do his homework and prepare for a life of hard work with "paper, paper, paper, all day long," and Felix's dad tells him that as an adult, "if you stay on the farm, it'll be nothing but work, work, work, all day long," he starts to question how good being human is after all. But is it too late to switch back?
Is It Any Good?
This offbeat fable has the look and vibe of a classic folktale and the kind of cheeky humor that skewers convention. Nothing unfolds as expected in Tom Nancy: The Sheep Who Swapped Brains with a Boy, which has all the elements to delight young readers: a selfish meanie vs. a nice but gullible hero, talking animals, a kooky sci-fi plot, a caricature of what adult life looks like to a kid, and a twist ending. As usual, author Mac Barnett finds a new path to funny, and X. Fang's digitally completed graphite illustrations update the look of traditional folktale characters. Get ready for giggles, especially on a page showing a kid shoveling farm animal poop.
